Air Infiltration at Floors - The photos below include a visible light and infrared photo of air (dark areas) leaking into a room between the sub-floor and wall framing of a home. Do you have light-colored carpet in your home with dark stains around the perimeter of each room? This occurs when the carpet filters dirt from the air leaking into the room.

Poor Ceiling Insulation - The photos below include a visible light and infrared photo of a poorly insulated vault ceiling in the foyer of a home. Dark areas indicate heat loss due to the lack of an air barrier or thermal barrier. Proper insulation and air sealing are required.

Air Infiltration at Ceiling Penetration – The photos below include a visible light and infrared photo of air infiltration around a second story can light. This indicates just how much air can enter through such a small opening.  Now multiply this situation by the number of ceiling penetrations in your home.

Air Infiltration at Windows – The photos below include a visible light and infrared photo of air leakage around window molding. This is a very common source of air leakage and the dark areas demonstrate just how much cold air can enter your home this way. Multiply this problem by the number of windows in your home, and you’ll quickly realize how big this problem can be.

Insufficient Attic Insulation – The photos below include a visible light and infrared photo of insufficient ceiling insulation.  Possible causes include poor installation at time of construction, settling due to age, or being disturbed by the homeowner, repairman, etc.

Ductwork Leakage - HVAC ductwork leakage typically ranges from 10% - 60% in a residential system. In the infrared photo on the left, you can see just how much heat (light area) is being lost into the wall cavity. This is of particular concern if this is an exterior facing wall.
